Know the way before you go
StreetRoutes lets you travel a route in real Street View before you set off: every street, corner and building along the way, right up to the door. This is why it exists.
Where the idea came from
It started with a simple question: can Google Maps play Street View along my route? It can't. Google Maps draws the route as a line, and you can drop into Street View at one spot at a time, but there's no way to watch the whole journey the way you'll actually see it.
So StreetRoutes does exactly that: give it a start and a destination, and it plays the trip in real street photos, stopping at each turn like a sat-nav and ending at the entrance.
The problem it solves
A map shows a blue line. It doesn't show which building, which corner or which side of the road.
Most wrong turns happen at the end: the right block, the hidden entrance, the station exit.
Which lane, where to turn, what the corner looks like: you only find out when you're already there.
Dropping into Street View spot by spot and dragging along the route takes ages, and most people give up.
Why it was built
Going somewhere for the first time is stressful for a lot of people: a driving test, a new job, a hospital appointment, a hotel in a city you don't know, or an older parent driving somewhere new. The worry is rarely the whole journey. It's not knowing what the tricky parts look like.
The purpose of StreetRoutes is to make the first trip feel like the second: you've already seen it, so on the day you can relax and recognise where you are.
How it helps you
You've seen the corners and landmarks before, so the real street looks familiar.
Every route ends facing the entrance, not just somewhere on the street.
Fewer surprises for learner drivers, older drivers, visitors and anyone who gets nervous about new places.
Watch the route with family before a trip, or send the link to whoever is going.
Free to use, kept running by your support
StreetRoutes is free for everyone, with no sign-up, no ads and no tracking. But it isn't free to run. If it helped you, a coffee helps cover:
Every map, street photo, route and address search is a paid Google service.
The website, the server that keeps keys safe, and the domain.
Fixing places that don't work, keeping up with Google changes, and adding what you ask for.
Questions
Is this navigation?
No. StreetRoutes is a preview to watch before you travel. Never use it while driving; use your usual navigation app on the day.
Where do the pictures come from?
Google Street View and Google Maps. Some places (private roads, estates, some countries) have no street photos yet.
What does "today's free routes have run out" mean?
To keep costs under control there's a shared daily allowance, plus a fair share for each connection. It resets every day. You can also use your own Google key (⚙ in the top corner).
Privacy
No accounts, no ads, no tracking. Addresses you type are sent (through StreetRoutes' server) to Google to find routes and places; StreetRoutes doesn't keep them. To prevent abuse, the server counts requests per visitor with an anonymous code that changes daily and is deleted after 2 days. Your settings (and your own key, if you add one) stay in this browser only. See Google's Maps Terms and Privacy Policy.
